We see the headlines on every magazine at the checkout counter extolling the virtues of exercise. It is an undisputed fact that it can add years to our lives. But now there’s evidence that it can also help our aging brains by taking years off. Studies are showing that brain fitness from regular aerobic exercise might delay or even reverse age-related brain deterioration. The Journal of Neurology has released a new study showing that regular exercise for those showing signs of Alzheimers experience 4 times less brain shrinkage than those who do not exercise. This is a marked improvement on the drugs available to treat Alzheimer’s disease. They only appear to work on symptoms for up to one year.
Of course this makes a lot of sense — it has been shown that those with normal brain activity experience improvement in thinking and memory due to exercise. It is believed that this is due to the boost in blood flow and elevated growth hormones that are benefits of exercise. continue reading »
